Vracevšnica Convent and the lodging that used to
be Serbia's capital for three years
Whenever
one hears the name of a small town on the Gornji Milanovac - Kragujevac
road, Vracevšnica, one is reminded of the Middle Ages and the
period right after the Battle of Kosovo. Leader Radic Postupovic
had a convent built in this area between the third and the fourth
decade of the 15th century. Torn down and restored, the convent
has survived and is being kept by nuns. It consists of three lodgings
built in different periods and the Church of St George. The tomb
of and monument to Miloš's mother Višnja are situated in the cloister.
The convent also has its treasury, where an 18th-century etching,
a cross used during the Second Serbian Insurrection and pieces
of furniture belonging to the Obrenovic Dynasty are being kept.
The loging of Prince Miloš, which used to be Serbia's capital
for three years until 1819, when it was moved to Kragujevac, is
situated in Gornja Crnuca, three or four kilometers away from
the convent.
Vujan Monastery, endowment of Queen Draga Mašin's
predecessor
The
woody Vujan hill overlooks Gornji Milanovac, and amidst the woods,
there is the Vujan Monastery. It was built in 1905 by Nikola Milicevic
Lunjevica, who participated in the Takovo insurrection, and who
is a relative of the last queen of the Obrenovic Dynasty, Draga
Mašin. The founder of the monastery and Miloš's Duke Lazar Mutap
were buried at the monastery.
